When I have an idea for a new painting or a commission I usually start to explore ideas with small oil sketches on Arches Oil Paper.

Here you can see a 48 x 23cm painting in an acid-free Mount with card backing. And on the right you can see the relative sizes of each painting (before they've been mounted):
