Commissioned Paintings

Most of my paintings begin with a particular moment of light, atmosphere, or emotion that stays with me long after I’ve left the landscape itself.

Over the years, many collectors have asked me to create paintings inspired by places, memories, or feelings that resonate deeply with them too - whether that’s a view they return to often, a certain quality of light, or simply a particular emotional atmosphere they experience in my work.

Usually, we’ll talk about the paintings you already feel drawn to, the sense of scale you’re looking for, and the atmosphere you’d like the work to hold within your space. From there, I develop the painting in my own way - allowing imagination, memory, and the evolving process of painting itself to guide the final work.

Rather than reproducing a specific photograph or scene exactly, my commissions emerge through the same creative process as all of my paintings: layers of observation, memory, emotion, and light gradually coming together over time.

The result is a deeply personal painting that still remains unmistakably my own work.

Fleeting Moments

My artistic vision

Cinematic Landscapes

Many commissions are inspired by the landscapes around West Dorset - Eggardon Hill, the Marshwood Vale, the Bride Valley and along the Jurassic Coast - though the deeper subject is often something less tangible: stillness, atmosphere, distance, weather, memory, or the feeling of being immersed within nature itself.

Commissions can be created in a wide range of sizes, from intimate works to large-scale statement paintings designed with particular spaces in mind.

Timeless Connections to Home

When a client asked me to paint a view near her home in West Dorset as a gift for her son, our conversations uncovered a deeper need - a desire to capture the essence of home, something timeless & deeply comforting.

Because of dull weather, I had to wait several weeks before discovering my moment of inspiration. I had found the perfect view close to her house, a vista rich with personal history & meaning. As I painted, I allowed the landscape to guide me, responding to the changing light & atmosphere until the piece felt complete.

It became more than a painting; it was an invitation to feel connected, a way to carry the warmth of home wherever life might lead.

Finding the Sublime in the Familiar

This commission took me back to the valley below Bulbarrow Hill, a place filled with childhood memories for both my client and myself. In my conversations with my client, it became clear that this landscape held a powerful emotional resonance. As I revisited the ancient hill fort, watching the skies, sketching & taking photos, I sought to capture not just the scene but the feeling of being there - the quiet, the light, the air.

Back in the studio, I intuitively pieced together these elements, merging my own sense of place with my client’s emotional connection, allowing the painting to evolve into something truly alive and deeply personal.

Evoking Joy in Nature’s Vibrancy

Sometimes, my art is about pure joy and the uplifting spirit of nature. For a client who loved bright, vibrant scenes, the bluebells on Lewesdon Hill were the perfect muse. I knew this landscape well, and my own delight in painting it was reflected in every brushstroke. Working on rough flax, I embraced the texture, the impasto, and the vivid collars, capturing not just a view but the lively energy of spring. This approach let me bring the scene to life in a way that felt fresh, spontaneous, and true to the spirit of the place.

Crafting Surreal Journeys of the Soul

For another client, the gentle contours of Lewesdon Hill offered a different kind of inspiration. Together, we explored my sketches and collages until one piece—a surreal reimagining of the hill—sparked her imagination. Altering the season, shifting the light, I let the painting unfold as a blend of reality and dream, driven by my intuition and her emotional response. The result was a landscape that felt both familiar and fantastical, a vision that resonated deeply because it honored our shared connection while remaining true to my own creative journey.

"Amazing!" David Ringman

"Wonderful pictures - Thankyou!" Melissa Temple Brown

Loose & Expressively Painted Oil Sketches

Some people love the very first marks that I make on the canvas, which I I would normally describe as 'sketches' or 'under-paintings'. For a mutil-layer painting I would then start building up layer-upon-layer of paint, but if I keep the painting at this initial stage, these bold & expressive pieces can create very eye-catching, highly effective, and extremely expressive paintings.

"Stunning!" Toni Tye & Lee Preisler

"Beautiful." Tara & David Cutler, New Forest

"Lovely stuff!" Susan Tapper

What is a Painting Commission?

A Painting Commision is a unique painting that I create just for you.

How do I create my Commissions?

I create my Commisions by talking with you about the art you love so that I can find a sensibility that we both share. Then I create the painting with you in mind.

So, you might ask, do I just make the painting you tell me to make?

No, I am trying to get at something deeper than that: to the emotional core of why you are drawn to my art, and to the particular paintings that resonate with you.

So, this is about feelings more than subject matter?

It's about both. All of my paintings emerge from me trying to capture or express a Feeling or a Mood, while also depicting a certain place that has a distinctive atmosphere.

Ok, so the painting is an expression of our shared feelings about a sense of place?

Yes, the painting literally emerges from our shared experience of the landscape. Then, your painting will gradually come into being through my own process of discovery, in my studio, where every one of my paintings is a journey, an adventure into the unknown...

Great. So, where do we start?

With over twenty years of experience creating commissioned paintings in oil on canvas, I understand how crucial it is for me to first gather detailed information about the mood & atmosphere that will resonate with you personally.

Private commissions have become a highlight of my practice, allowing me to deeply explore & connect with the subject matter.

While my art often involves play & experimentation, commissioned work also requires focused discipline & dedication to produce truly exceptional results.

These commissions inspire me to be ambitious and to achieve excellence through patient, traditional techniques, combined with a fresh, contemporary edge.

Once I have a clear sense of what you’re looking for, we’ll decide on the size & shape of the canvas and whether it will be a single piece or a series of paintings.

Then, after agreeing on the price and payment plan, I’ll take a deposit and begin creating a painting that will truly reflect and evoke your most cherished moments.
